New Art Projects: AD 118 and AD 134 and My Dear Disco

Classes have gotten more difficult and time consuming. However the product is extremely rewarding and exciting. I designed a Monopoly board about the pseudo-science Phrenology, as well as a self-portrait for electronic imaging. My Dear Disco is playing Nov. 5th and 6th at the Up Front in Marquette, MI and I’ve heard wonderful things about their live performances. I will be attending both nights.

Debut Album and Performance by The Terminal Orchestra

The Terminal Orchestra (conducted by Jesse DeCaire) delicately captures and composes the essence of music. The live performance on Oct. 8th 2010 , as well as the CD, encompasses the listener with stories whose grand ideas, interesting people, sweeping landscapes and thunderous storms are woven throughout the music. Experiencing The Terminal Orchestra brought forth the tingling  and magical sensations reminiscent of falling in love or the excitement of something new. The music is a terminal emotion that starts in the ears, arrives in the stomach, works its way through the blood, and settles warmly in the face.

About 70 people filled the NMU’s Art & Design lounge for the performance and The Terminal Orchestra was well respected and wonderfully applauded. I didn’t hear a single cell-phone ring and the typical banter that usually occurs during a concert was non-existent. Everyone was attentive and I felt guilty for even interrupting the meditative hold by moving to take a few pictures. After the show there were CD’s for sale for $5 and plenty of people were buying them- something I rarely see people do after a show. I bought my copy too and have been listening to it throughout the length of this blog.

If you were unable to pick up a copy at show they will be available for sale on October 12th at the Phratry Records website and you can visit The Terminal Orchestra’s website here.

Its unfair, but often  necessary to compare music to other music.

The Terminal Orchestra is uniquely its own breed of Indy soundtrack music reminiscent of:

Kaada’s “Music for Movie-bikers”
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Soundtracks
Explosions in the Sky
Their live cover of a Metallica song brought to mind Ennio Morricone
Perhaps  Sigur Ros and moments of Pelican

NMU NAEA- poster design

Here is the poster I designed with others in the AIGA group at NMU. I worked primarily on the hands, brushes and pencils.  Noah revamped my text and changed the yellow to white so it would be easier to read. Its fun learning and designing. NMU NAEA wanted the time left black so they can write their meeting times in. Hopefully everyone is enjoying a beautiful Thursday here in Marquette, MI.

Up! and other directions I wish to go.

I started reading Chuck Klosterman and forgot how much he makes me laugh while reading. Its good. Up! is a new piece of artwork I designed for Electronic Imaging. I would tell you what I would like to do, but it seems that if I mention it on my blog it never happens. I am very consistent at falling into the inconsistent blogger area; a gray zone I would rather not be associated with. I designed a poster with the NMU AIGA group for the NMU National Art Education Association. Job interview tomorrow and I am volunteering for a youth development organization here in Marquette. Good things are happening.

Finished Projects: AD 134 AND AD 118

I worked on a rendition of Saul Williams excerpt:

The Greatest Americans
Have not been born yet
They are waiting patiently
for the past to die
PLEASE GIVE BLOOD.

I used my own blood to create the sand/blood pouring for the hands. This is the complete work.

I had to create an 8×8 representation of the element SELENIUM. It was a difficult process that eventually led to showing cancer’s ability to fight free radicals that cause cancer. This is the complete work.
